Around the World with Hilton: Tessa’s Hospitality Journey

For Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the women whose passion and purpose bring Hilton’s culture to life and make the Stay for our guests—like Tessa, Food & Drinks (F&D) Manager at Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Having joined Hilton as an intern, she has since held six roles across five countries. Those experiences have shaped her into a leader grounded in connection and the belief that hospitality begins with understanding people. Keep reading to explore the lessons Tessa has learned from working around the world, the moments that have shaped her journey, and her advice for women forging their own path in hospitality.

Get to Know Tessa

You have worked across four countries in just four years with Hilton. How has experiencing different cultures shaped the way you lead teams and collaborate with others?

“I have learned that every country and culture comes with its own characteristics and way of communicating. As a Dutch person, I had to adjust, becoming a bit chattier and softer in my approach rather than very direct. Living and working in different countries has helped me adapt quickly to different people and backgrounds. It has made me more patient and more curious about the ‘why’ behind someone’s behavior. I have learned never to assume, but to take the time to truly get to know the people I work with, because every individual brings something unique to the table.”

What moments or programs at Hilton have been most impactful in shaping your career, and how have your leaders helped empower your growth throughout this journey?

“Every experience so far has been meaningful in its own way, but what stands out most is how I was welcomed at the corporate office in Dubai. I was the first intern in the office, surrounded by very senior leaders, and I had to find my place. Our former President of Hilton MEA & Türkiye gave me incredible exposure across the MEA region and involved me in several projects that were close to my heart. That experience showed me that within Hilton, opportunities are truly endless.”

Hilton’s culture is rooted in creating opportunities and helping every Team Member thrive. How do you see that culture come to life in your day-to-day work, and in what ways do you strive to pay it forward by supporting others on your team?

“During the Elevator program, I had the privilege of collaborating with many different leaders. No matter how busy they were, they always made time for me and openly shared their experiences with a young leader. That generosity really stayed with me. I try to pay it forward by creating a space where we learn together, speak openly about failures, and celebrate big lessons. In the end, we all grow faster when we share our journeys and support one another.”

You gained experience across several areas of the business before discovering that F&D was your true calling. What excites you about F&D, and how do you use it as a space to create memorable guest experiences?

“Food & Drinks is where my hospitality journey started, and it still feels like home to me. What excites me most is how quickly you can make an impact. With just a few touchpoints, you can completely change a guest’s day. I have seen guests arrive frustrated after a delayed flight, but with a thoughtful gesture and a genuine smile, you can see them relax and feel welcome. That immediate connection and the ability to turn a moment around is what makes F&D so powerful to me.”

As you step into your new role as F&D Manager, what advice would you give women who aspire to grow their careers in hospitality and take on leadership positions?

“Be confident, trust the process, and ask questions. You will never feel 100% ready for the next step. Growth often starts outside your comfort zone. Stay true to yourself, remain curious, and keep learning. If you do that, you will find the right mentors and support along the way that will help you achieve your goals.”
