FAQS

Open/close FAQs

At what time of the year does the combined professional training program start?

Combined, or “Dual” professional training programs for Hotel Management Assistants and Chefs start on August 1st or February 1st. Programs for Hotel Commercial Managers and Event Managers start once a year only (in August).

Where can I train?

You can apply as a trainee at the following sites: Hilton Berlin, Waldorf Astoria Berlin, Hilton Bonn, Hilton Frankfurt, Hilton Frankfurt Airport, Hilton Garden Inn Frankfurt Airport, Hilton Cologne, Hilton Mainz, Hilton Mainz City, Hilton Munich Airport, Hilton Munich City, Hilton Munich Park, Hilton Nuremberg.

When is the application deadline?

You may apply at any time during the year. However, the best time to submit your application is 11 to 7 months ahead of the beginning of the desired program. But do not hesitate to apply spontaneously even on shorter notice. Sometimes an application is withdrawn so the trainee position opens up again. On the other hand, because of the large number of applications received we cannot guarantee that every short-notice application will be considered. If not, we will ask your patience until the next program starts.

How are trainee candidates selected?

If we find your application to be convincing, we will invite you to a personal visit so we can get to know each other. We rarely use assessment centers to select our trainees. When we do, the primary purpose is to get to know each other rather than identifying an applicant’s “weaknesses.”

I would like to discontinue my university studies in favor of starting a professional training program.

We welcome applications from university students who have come to the realization that they would actually prefer a more practical professional training program.

Can I apply at several hotels at the same time?

You are welcome to do so. But please, by all means tell us in your application letter all the sites you are interested in so we can allocate your application appropriately and check all training opportunities at those sites for you.

Is a German high school diploma (Abitur) a prerequisite for hotel training?

In general it is. Most (not all) of our talented trainees have completed this diploma (Abitur). But what matters to us most is the personality of each young applicant. So if you have another school diploma with a good grade point average to offer and can convince us that you are right for Hilton without an Abitur, that option is open to you, as well.

Is a German high school diploma (Abitur) a prerequisite for chef training?

For training as a chef you do not need to have an Abitur diploma. Being a chef is a highly creative and practical job where you can be brilliant and have a great career without having obtained an Abitur.

Which would be more suitable for me: “Hotel Management Assistant” (Hotelfachfrau or Hotelfachmann) or “Hotel Commercial Manager” (Hotelkauffrau or Hotelkaufmann)?

You will get to know all the different departments of a Hotel no matter which professional goal you choose. The difference between these programs is a slightly different focus, and hence, the amount of time you will spend in each department. You are free to specify both programs in your application. We will then help you identify the focus that best fits your interests.

How much will I earn as a trainee?

Trainee wages continue to rise. Your pay will depend on the labor agreement in force at the time and at your hotel site. Therefore we cannot give you a definite figure here. However, you can easily find the applicable rates using Google (or any other search engine ;-)).

Will I be able to stay overnight in Hilton hotels while being a trainee?

The Go Hilton Team Member Travel Program enables you to book rooms in thousands of Hilton hotels worldwide at Team rates, which are really affordable! You will also be given Silver status as an HHonors member and get a 50% discount on gastronomy services at the destination hotel. And that is by no means all: You may name up to ten family members or friends who will likewise be able to book rooms at our hotels at significantly discounted rates. Sounds good, right? :)

Are there any other benefits, as well?

To make sure our global workforce of approximately 300,000 employees feel at home in our company, we provide them with a wide range of benefits beyond their monthly wage. Striving to be among most popular employers of every city, we are constantly working to further improve our employee benefit packages.

Will I have to work weekends while being a trainee?

We operate more than 4,800 hotels around the world, and in each and every one of them our employees are there for our guests seven days per week – including weekends. This is a special requirement in the hospitality and tourism industry, from hotels to airports and airlines ... But, no worries: You are going to quickly adjust to changing working hours and discover that your family and friends don't have a problem with them either. Needless to say, you will not have to work through every weekend.

Will I receive a free uniform?

Yes, as a trainee you will get your Hilton uniform from your employer who will also have it dry cleaned professionally. Some departments in specific hotels have their own, more specialized rules. You will learn more during your personal interview.

Will I be allowed to have a beard or piercings and tattoos?

Our industry adapts to contemporary fashion. While leading hospitality companies used to be quite strict about prohibiting any such individual styling until just a few years ago, we have come to take a more relaxed approach in recent years. There is nothing to be said against a well-groomed beard—it actually looks really attractive. Similarly, a part of a tattoo showing here or there from under your clothing or a small, sparkly nose or ear stud is not a reason to be concerned. There are just a few exceptions, however which we find very difficult to endorse 100 percent from an esthetic viewpoint, such as certain types of facial piercings or neck tattoos.

Can I spend some time abroad while being a trainee?

Erasmus+ collaboration arrangements between many of our hotels open up this general possibility (from the second year of your training program onwards).

Will I be able to continue working at Hilton once my training program is finished?

That is our goal! After we have provided you with the best possible training, we would very much like you to remain with us. At the beginning of your training program, you will receive our Hilton “iStay” job guarantee. Provided that you fulfill specific, clearly defined criteria and performance requirements as a trainee, we guarantee to offer you at least one specific job in a Hilton hotel upon completion of your training program. Top-ranking Hilton trainees may apply for a Hilton Management Development Program following their Management Trainee program.

Can I also apply for a combined work-while-studying program?

We can offer only very few training opportunities to university students at this time. For an optimum career launch in the hospitality industry we generally recommend entering a typical combined (or “dual”) professional training program at a Hilton hotel; if desired, trainees may add an internal or external academic program afterwards.

Will I be able to eventually become a hotel manager or head chef?

Certainly! Many of our hotel directors around the world once began their career with a training program at Hilton in Germany, then went on adding more qualifications through our numerous internal development programs.

Will I have to work abroad at a later time?

There is no obligation to do so. However, we do recommend spending a couple of years in other countries. This will broaden your horizon, familiarize you with various types of hotel operations and may just really get your career going!

May I apply by e-mail?

You may (please see below for our address). But we would be really happy if you would use our online application platform which is accessible from this page. All major companies use platforms like this one nowadays, and it is therefore a good idea to learn how to apply in this manner because you will have to do so again on future occasions throughout your career.
