From Classroom to Career: How Hilton and Fundación Tomillo Are Building Hospitality Careers

We are delighted to spotlight Boeira Garden Hotel Porto’s inspiring partnership with Fundación Tomillo – a project supported by Hilton that equips young people with the skills, training and confidence needed to build careers in hospitality.

This initiative is part of Travel with Purpose, Hilton’s global strategy to redefine and advance sustainable travel. As part of the programme, Boeira Garden Hotel Porto welcomed five students through the Erasmus+ programme – a European Union initiative that supports young people across Europe in education, training and sport. The one-month internship, carried out across the hotel’s Information Technology, Maintenance and Culinary departments, provided these students with valuable hands-on learning, confidence and a global perspective.

In this blog, we hear from Silvia Xicola, HR Manager at Madrid Airport Hilton, who initiated this impactful partnership, along with three dedicated team members from Boeira Garden Hotel Porto — Bruno Drumonda, Douglas Pereira, and Ines Matos — who helped bring the internship to life. But don't just take our word for it, hear from some of the Heads of Department who were directly involved with this amazing experience.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know that we’re helping shape their future and showing them that they belong in this industry” – Silvia Xicola, HR Manager of Madrid Airport Hilton.

“Being able to positively impact our Team Member’s experiences, supporting their development, celebrating their achievements, and ensuring they feel heard and appreciated. It’s incredibly fulfilling to help create an environment where everyone can thrive”

What inspired your partnership with Fundación Tomillo and what was the most memorable part?

“Our partnership was inspired by a shared commitment to creating opportunities and empowering young people. What makes it so special is our hands-on approach, from hosting hotel visits to organising interactive workshops, we’ve been able to offer the students a real introduction to the hospitality world”

Have you hosted any events or activations related to this initiative? If so, what was the impact?

“To celebrate this partnership, we invited other hotels and key suppliers to give greater visibility to the foundation’s incredible work. We showcased the impact of the initiative and presented the Hilton Global Foundation donation to Fundación Tomillo– creating a strong sense of community and inclusivity.”

Therefore, being able to welcome Fundación Tomillo and provide a solid foundation for the trainees was not only meaningful – but incredibly rewarding.”

How do you believe Fundación Tomillo has supported your property?

“By supporting the development of these students who partnered with us, it is clear they are a valuable asset to any team.”

How is Hilton different from other hospitality companies?

“The culture. Hilton truly lives what it preaches. The people are treated differently here – there’s room to grow, to learn, to make mistakes, and improve. The environment is inclusive, welcoming and, above all, human. I feel part of something bigger, and that makes all the difference”.

What was your favourite part about this pathway?

“The best part of this unforgettable experience was sharing my entire professional journey in technology – from LinkedIn to automation tools. This partnership aligns perfectly with Hilton’s belief in creating real opportunities for people who want to grow – making their professional growth even more special to be a part of.”

Ines Matos, (HR Manager, Boeria Garden Hotel Porto)

What inspired your partnership, and what is your favourite part about this pathway?

“This program gave our incredible students the chance to develop technical skills, immerse themselves in a new culture and for many, travel internationally for the first time. What is even more special was the ability to have their teachers with them by their side – making sure the experience was well-organized and as meaningful as it was memorable”

Have you hosted any events or activations related to this initiative? If so, what was the impact?

“We hosted a breakfast which was more than coffee and croissants – it was a way to celebrate with all involved the student’s achievements, reflect on the journey and present their well-earned certificates.”

“We’re incredibly proud of how the program unfolded and grateful to everyone who played a part in making it so special. Here’s to continuing the tradition next year and welcoming another group of bright, curious minds!”
