From Inspiration to Impact: Meet the Mother-Son Duo Making “The Stay” at Hilton

At Hilton, we believe that lifelong learning and multi-generational collaboration are crucial to fostering innovation, uncovering new ways of thinking, and driving personal and organizational growth. These values are why we proudly celebrate Intergenerational Month each September.

This year, our Generations Team Member Resource Group (TMRG) has selected the theme "shared passions and priorities across all ages and stages" for Intergenerational Month. Maria “Gil” Gilnete and Thalles, two Team Members at Hilton Morumbi in Brazil, exemplify the spirit of this theme perfectly—in addition to being coworkers, they are also mother and son. Thalles, who, as his mother fondly says, "grew up in this hotel” was inspired by Gil’s outstanding career and chose to follow in her footsteps—their shared love for hospitality shows how different generations can find commonality, leading to a vibrant workplace culture. Keep reading to get to know this duo and explore how they make The Stay together at Hilton.

A Legacy of Dedication: Meet Maria "Gil" Gilnete

Maria Gilnete, known affectionately as Gil, has been a pillar of Hilton Morumbi for over twenty-two years. As an Atelier Assistant, she has become the heart and soul of the team, often being the first point of contact for new Team Members. Her role, which involves managing uniforms and creating an inviting atmosphere, is performed with a level of care and attention that makes the hotel feel like home for everyone who walks through its doors.

Reflecting on her career, Gil shares, “My journey at Hilton is marked by many personal and professional achievements, including realizing the dream of owning my own home, raising my two children, and helping Thalles pursue his college education. One of my most special memories is Thalles' baby shower when every hotel department came together to participate. It was a moment of great care and support, during which I received all the baby items I needed from the team.”

This sense of community, deeply ingrained in Hilton’s culture, has not only supported Gil throughout her career but has also influenced her son, Thalles, to continue the family’s legacy in the hotel industry.

Forging His Path: Get to Know Thalles

Thalles grew up surrounded by the dynamic energy of Hilton Morumbi, watching his mother build her career. This early exposure left an impression on him, leading to his decision to join Team Hilton as an apprentice. “I’ve been attending the hotel’s parties and celebrations since I was a child, always asking [my mom] to bring me along because I’ve always loved it here—the atmosphere, the way people take care of each other, and, of course, our guests,” he says.

His journey from a young observer to a valued Team Member reflects the impact his mother’s passion for hospitality had on him.

“Seeing my mother's dedication and commitment to Hilton was the main inspiration and motivation that made me want to be part of this team,” Thalles explains."

Now employed in the hotel’s Team Member restaurant, he brings his own flair to the role, blending the diligence and care he witnessed growing up with the readiness and agility that define his generation.

The influence, however, is not one-sided. Gil says Thalles’ devotedness to building his culinary career has inspired her in return. “His enthusiasm for improving and striving for excellence in what he does is a constant source of inspiration for me,” she says, demonstrating how intergenerational differences can be a strength.

The Power of Shared Passions

For Gil and Thalles, one of the most profound ways they connect personally and professionally is through their shared love for cooking. This common passion strengthens their bond and ability to collaborate effectively at work. “We always prepare dishes together—each contributing to the process and sharing tasks. It has always brought us closer and allows us to exchange lessons and experiences constantly,” they share.

Gil and Thalles’ relationship is a shining example of the benefits of multi-generational collaboration. As they explain, the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and perspectives between different generations not only enriches the workplace but also drives innovation and inclusivity in our hotels and beyond.
