In today's world, the true essence of diversity, equity and inclusion lies in embracing the unique abilities of individuals and celebrating their achievements. Vincent Baur, a server at the  Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, is a shining example of someone who has surpassed societal barriers and displayed his incredible talent on a global stage. Diagnosed with Down syndrome, Vincent recently participated in the  Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, leaving a lasting impact on all who know him.

Vincent's Olympic Journey

Vincent's passion for cycling began just four years ago, and he quickly excelled in the sport. His dedication and talent earned him a spot in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, the largest inclusive sporting event in the world. Representing both Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), he fearlessly participated in the 5km cycling race, proving that determination knows no limits.

The result of that determination was nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did Vincent compete at the highest level of his sport, but he also formed lasting friendships with athletes from all over. Looking back, he expressed that competing in Berlin was an unforgettable experience. "Everything was great. I met new friends, and I felt happy."  His contagious enthusiasm and positive spirit radiated throughout the event, leaving an indelible mark on all who encountered him.

The Power of Support and Flexibility

Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers exemplified the true meaning of a supportive workplace as Vincent prepared for the Games. Recognizing his talent and goals, the team gave him time off to train and committed to working around his schedule. Such flexibility and understanding speak to the inclusive environment at Hilton, where every Team Member can thrive, regardless of their unique circumstances. The team further demonstrated their support for Vincent on his last before leaving to compete. Surprising him with a heartfelt send-off, they celebrated Vincent with cake and wished him good luck. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Vincent felt deeply honored by their gesture and pledged to bring home a medal, a promise he would soon fulfill.

Starting over in a new country brought uncertainty, but Hilton quickly became a place where she felt welcomed and encouraged.“Hilton was my first job here, and they supported me from the beginning,” Monica says. “Now I can hold basic conversations with clients in German.”For Monica, that support has extended far beyond helping her adjust to a new country. What first sparked your interest in moving to HR consulting, and what skills or perspectives from your early roles in feasibility still influence the way you approach your work today?“I was very inspired when Hilton was named the #1 workplace. I remember being at the in-person celebration in McLean and realizing just how much HR shapes the Team Member experience. As someone who is very purpose-driven, the opportunity to create meIn my current role, I support the Development team and help align HR strategy with Hilton’s growth strategy. Coming from a hotel real estate and feasibility background, I bring a strong understanding of the business to the role. Having previously parHow did Hilton support your transition into HR consulting and help you navigate that change with confidence?“Hilton played a huge role in supporting my transition, and the API Team Member Resource Group (TMRG) was especially impactful. TMRGs at Hilton are open to all Team Members, including community members and allies. When I first became interested in HRHaley and fellow Hilton Team Members attend the Great Place to Work Summit. What about hospitality, and Hilton specifically, has kept you engaged and excited throughout your career?“My passion for hospitality started early – I grew up in six cities across the US and Belgium. Moving frequently and traveling exposed me to new cultures, foods, and people, and sparked my love for connection. To me, that is the essence of hospitalitI have always believed hospitality has the power to build bridges between people from different backgrounds, which is why I’m so grateful to work for a company that brings that to life every day.
