Matthew's Hilton journey has taken him around the world.
Although Matthew started as an overnight Banquets Steward at the Hilton Sydney working nights in college, the opportunities for growth and space to learn at Hilton made it easy to continue his career at Hilton. Several roles, hotels, and countries later, he shares how he found his personal career path, the best advice he received while doing so, and what he loves most about working at Hilton below.
Get to Know Matthew
“In my very first role at Hilton, I was responsible for cleaning up after functions and preparing for the next day’s events. Later, I transitioned to the Finance team, which created new opportunities for collaboration within my hotel and across other hotels in Australia. In 2016, I came across an opening to join a new team in the Asia Pacific (APAC) regional corporate office. I had worked with members of this team at the Hilton Sydney and was fortunate enough to join them full-time, which meant relocating to Singapore that year. I spent the next three years traveling across the region to some of the most amazing hotels and beautiful countries in the world. Then, another opportunity presented itself to relocate to New York City. Shortly after moving, COVID shut down the city. Fortunately, through the relationships formed during my time in APAC, I managed to keep a part-time role in the United States. Now, I am the Director of the Workforce Performance team, whose purpose is to support hotel time & attendance and labor management for Full Service & Luxury hotels in the US, Canada, and CALA regions.”

What do you love most about your role and the work you do?
“There are two things I love about my job. The first is my team. Workforce Performance is a large, fully remote team for Hilton and has Team Members from varied backgrounds and expertise. Despite being spread across the country, we always find time to collaborate on projects and support one another when needed. We have always felt close as a department! The second thing I love is the versatility of my role. Our team is somewhat of a hybrid between Finance, Human Resources, and Operations, so we get to work with partners at the hotel and regional levels from a broad background of functions. As such, we continually learn new things about the business, including trends, development, and direction. This insight helps us better shape our support to align with the needs of Hilton and our hotels.”

How has Hilton supported your career growth and development?
“Hilton encourages Team Members to learn, try new things, and get to know more areas of the hotel business beyond their department. I have yet to meet a Senior Leader who would not take 10 minutes out of their week to explain a little more about themselves, their teams, and their responsibilities. I have been fortunate enough to be invited into several task force programs, through which I traveled for work while helping to open new hotels. These programs have allowed me to collaborate with different teams globally while expanding my network, skill set, and understanding of the organization. My task force experiences have helped propel me into new opportunities globally, from Sydney to Singapore and now to the US."

Is there anything else you would like to share about your Hilton journey?
“After 12 years, I have managed to see so many unique destinations and visited some of the best hotels in the world. I have traveled to places, met people, and learned countless lessons about parts of the world and myself that I would never have had the chance to do without this company. I look forward to many more years and adventures with Hilton!"Share this story:
